The Outstanding Physician Award

The Outstanding Physician Award to recognize a physician who has made exceptional contributions to the clinical care of patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease. In addition, the recipient is acknowledged by patients and families as a caring and dedicated healthcare provider, and/or by peers as having made substantial impact to the delivery of clinical care of patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease. This award celebrates those specialists who have displayed a steadfast commitment to their patients, serving as both physician and patient advocate, often beyond normal “office” hours. 

2015 recipient: Dr. Tony Otley, Halifax, NS

Dr. Otley is a pediatric gastroenterologist from IWK Health Center in Halifax. He was instrumental in starting the first overnight camp for kids with Crohn’s and colitis in Canada, which opened the door for Crohn’s and Colitis Canada to launch Camp Got2Go for kids all across the country. Dr. Otley is a valued member of the Crohn’s and Colitis Canada family, serving on our Scientific and Medical Advisory Council for several years, and acting as an advocate and media spokesperson on behalf of patients and families in Halifax and across the country.

Dr. Otley was nominated by the mother of a 13 year old who was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis at the age of 3 who commented on his over-and-above support and enthusiasm in helping his patients and their families. She said: “He shows tremendous respect for his young patients, even when it’s as simple as getting down to eye level to talk to her. He is kind hearted and we feel he is a friend an ally in this battle against colitis”.
